Cawston Press, based in Kettering, has strengthened its position in the beverage market by acquiring all outstanding shares of LA Brewery. This follows an initial investment made earlier this year, as noted by our sister publication, The Grocer.
Founded by Louise Avery in 2017, LA Brewery has carved out a niche as a provider of premium, alcohol-free beverages that serve as an alternative to traditional wine. Its offerings are readily available through various retail channels, including Ocado, Booths, Amazon, The Wine Society, and other independent stores.
The connection between the two companies runs deep, with Mark Palmer, co-founder of Cawston Press, serving as both an investor and a board member of LA Brewery. Post-acquisition, Avery will remain involved with the company as an advisor, ensuring continuity in leadership.
Steve Kearns, the managing director, remarked to The Grocer that there is a growing consumer appetite for high-quality non-alcoholic options. “We have been involved with LA Brewery for some time, providing sales representation in the UK retail trade, so have got to know the business well,” he explained.
Kearns highlighted that the opportunity to acquire LA Brewery emerged earlier this year, and subsequent conversations culminated in this full acquisition. “Louise and her team have developed outstanding natural drinks that complement our existing ranges, such as Cawston Press juices and the Loah non-alcoholic beer lineup. We look forward to building upon the efforts already made by her team,” he said.
In 2025, LA Brewery faced challenges that led to the closure of its Suffolk production facility, following a strategic review, even after securing £1 million from shareholders at the year’s end. The brand also made the strategic decision to move away from single-serve glass bottles, opting instead for an innovative can range alongside its 750ml “champagne-style” bottles.
This latest acquisition follows Cawston Press’s recent addition of the non-alcoholic beer brand Loah to its portfolio earlier this year.
Meg Ellis, managing director of LA Brewery, expressed her satisfaction in finding a new investor to advance the brand’s future. “Cawston Press possesses the infrastructure necessary to support and propel the next chapter of our brand’s journey, all while respecting our creativity and independent spirit,” she stated.
She also shared gratitude for the support received from investors and team members who have played a vital role in the brand’s early development. “The brand is very well placed to take the next steps and to benefit from the growing macro trends around healthy modern drinking,” she concluded.
