Japanese firm Mizkan, which also owns Haywards and Branston, is investing significantly in its Middleton facility located in Rochdale. This strategic move aims to meet the surging demand for Japanese vinegar products across the UK and European markets.
At its primary production site in Middleton, Mizkan manufactures both Japanese vinegar and Sarson’s vinegar. This investment will facilitate opportunities for workforce upskilling, facility expansion, refurbishment, and the introduction of new product development initiatives.
Notably, this investment announcement aligns with a trade mission to Osaka led by a senior Greater Manchester delegation, which includes Mayor Andy Burnham.
“Mizkan is excited to be investing in the future of our long-established Middleton factory, developing our people and equipping ourselves for innovation and growth, particularly within premium and Japanese vinegars,” commented Chikara Tanaka, CEO of Mizkan UK.
Mayor Burnham welcomed the news, highlighting its positive implications for Greater Manchester.
“Mizkan’s £17 million investment demonstrates the confidence that this iconic Japanese brand has in our city-region,” he stated.
“The creation of high-skilled jobs and the expansion of their Middleton facility exemplify the advanced manufacturing growth we strive to achieve.”
“I visited their site earlier this month and met with Mizkan’s president during our previous mission to Japan in 2023. It was fantastic to learn about their commitment to Greater Manchester and their innovation partnerships with our universities.”
“This investment announcement coincides with our trade mission to Japan, showcasing the robust relationships we have cultivated with Japanese businesses, which will subsequently create opportunities for the people of Greater Manchester.”
Manchester’s inward investment agency, MIDAS, also lauded Mizkan’s investment in the region.
“Mizkan’s substantial investment in their Middleton operations underscores how Greater Manchester continues to attract significant expansion projects from established international companies within the advanced manufacturing sector, particularly in Rochdale,” said Joe Manning, managing director at MIDAS.
“Greater Manchester has been fostering its relationship with Japan for several years, with over 25 Japanese businesses now choosing our city-region as their UK base across diverse sectors.”
“We eagerly anticipate the realization of these plans, which will demonstrate why Greater Manchester is an ideal location for international businesses aspiring to expand their European operations.”
