Novo Nordisk, a leading supplier of GLP-1 weight-loss medications, has appointed Mars CEO Poul Weihrauch as a “board observer.” This role is pivotal as the pharmaceutical company markets GLP-1 drugs under esteemed brands like Ozempic and Wegovy.

GLP-1 medications have gained traction for their appetite-suppressing properties, initially approved for treating Type 2 diabetes in the US over 15 years ago and later for obesity around a decade ago. As consumer interest in these drugs intensifies, their influence on purchasing behavior within the food and beverage industry is drawing increased scrutiny. Some analysts anticipate that the rising utilization of GLP-1 medications may lead to a “structural” shift in food and drink consumer trends. Research indicates that demand among users for sweet and savory snacks may have already been impacted.

In light of the growing consumer focus on these medications, food and beverage manufacturers, as well as retailers, are assessing their sales strategies and product offerings to adapt to changing appetites.

When asked about Weihrauch’s appointment, a Novo Nordisk spokesperson remarked, “We invited Poul Weihrauch to serve as an observer on the board to benefit from his sector knowledge and global leadership experience. As the CEO and president of Mars, Poul brings deep commercial insight into multinational consumer markets, strong experience with brand and supply-chain strategy, and proven leadership in driving large, complex organizations, all of which are highly relevant to our strategic priorities.”

Weihrauch will serve as a board observer for the 2026/2027 term, with plans for his nomination as a board member at Novo Nordisk’s AGM in March 2027. His extensive experience in the food and drink business makes him a valuable asset, having joined Mars in 2000 and rising through the ranks to become group CEO in 2022.

As these developments unfold, industry leaders continue to monitor the evolving landscape of food and beverage industry trends influenced by consumer behavior shifts.
