Hylife Foods has promoted Karan Sangfai to CEO, subsequently taking over the president role from Grant Lazaruk who is retiring in February. Sangfai, currently the chief strategic officer at the Manitoba-headquartered business, is set to assume his new positions on March 1. Lazaruk, who has led Hylife Foods as president and CEO since 2010, expressed his decision to step down, stating, “I feel the timing is right for me to transition and focus more on community-minded initiatives”. He added, “I am also looking forward to spending more time with my family and grandchildren.”

Sangfai, who has been part of the Hylife Foods leadership team since 2022, will be assuming leadership of the company as it continues its operations in raising pigs and processing meat for the North American market, while also supplying to Asian markets through its offices in China and Japan. The company also exports to various other markets including the Asia Pacific, Europe, South America, and South Africa.

In 2020, Hylife Foods increased its US presence by acquiring a 75% equity stake in American peer Prime Pork based in Minnesota, including a factory in Windom. However, the company also faced challenges which led to the loss of jobs, with more than 1,000 jobs lost at its pork facility in Windom and over 80 administrative and processing positions cut in Canada last year. Despite this, Sangfai stated, “Our industry has recently faced challenges, but HyLife is strong and well-positioned,” expressing confidence in the company’s future prospects under his leadership.
