Clemens Food Group, a prominent player in the US pork production sector, has announced the impending closure of its Kunzler facility in Pennsylvania, which will unfortunately result in the layoff of around 200 employees.

This strategic decision aligns with the end of production for all remaining contracted customers, affecting 193 workers in total. In May, Clemens Food Group had expanded its operations by acquiring local competitor Kunzler & Company, which included a plant in Lancaster and two additional sites in Tyrone Township, Pennsylvania.

In connection with the planned closure, the company has issued a WARN Notice to its employees, outlining the final operational date. The Kunzler plant, situated at 652 Manor St, will remain closed until a suitable new owner can be found.

Clemens Food Group expressed empathy in a recent statement, saying, “We understand this news is disappointing and distressing for those who will be affected by the closure of the Lancaster facility. We also recognize that all individuals affected have contributed to Kunzler’s success, and their dedication and hard work have been invaluable to the company’s history.”

Operations at the Kunzler site are expected to conclude on December 7. Meanwhile, discussions with potential buyers are ongoing, indicating a proactive approach to the transition.

Following the closure, Kunzler-branded products will continue to be manufactured under the Clemens Food Group umbrella. The company has also committed to collaborating with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) to facilitate a smooth transition for workers.

However, UFCW Local 152 has responded to the closure by alleging discrimination and unfair labor practices. The union has filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), claiming that actions were taken to undermine union membership. Of the affected workforce, approximately 145 out of 193 employees belong to the UFCW.

As the food and beverage industry grapples with these changes, stakeholders are closely watching Clemens Food Group’s strategy and response.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the food and drink business, trends such as these highlight the significant impact of corporate decisions on employment and local economies. As the industry adapts, maintaining strong communication and collaboration between companies and their workforce will be crucial for navigating these challenging times.
