Mondelēz International, the renowned confectionery giant, has officially discontinued the dark chocolate variant of its widely popular Toblerone bar in the UK.

In light of evolving consumer preferences, Mondelēz International has confirmed that the beloved dark chocolate Toblerone bars will no longer be available for purchase in the UK market. A spokesperson for the company articulated this shift by stating, “We continuously adapt our product range to ensure it meets changing tastes whilst supporting growth for our customers and business, and as a result, made the difficult decision to discontinue our Toblerone Dark (360g) bars in the UK.” This decision underscores Mondelēz’s commitment to staying aligned with consumer demands and market trends.

The Iconic Toblerone Design

To appreciate the significance of this decision, it is essential to delve into the history of Toblerone. In 1868, Jean Tobler laid the foundation by opening a confectionery shop in Bern, Switzerland. His entrepreneurial spirit led to the establishment of a chocolate factory in 1899. The original Toblerone bar, characterized by its unique triangular shape and delectable white nougat pieces, was created in 1908 by Theodor Tobler, Jean’s son, alongside his cousin Emil Bauman. They ingeniously combined the founder’s name, ‘Tobler,’ with ‘torrone,’ the Italian term for honey and almond nougat, giving birth to the signature bar we know today.

Fast forward to 1969, when the dark chocolate variation was introduced to treat chocolate enthusiasts looking for richer flavors. By 1970, the iconic packaging was further enhanced with an image of Switzerland’s Matterhorn mountain, a symbol synonymous with the country’s chocolate heritage. However, in response to ‘Swissness’ legislation and the recent relocation of certain production processes from Switzerland to Slovakia, the Matterhorn image was replaced in 2023 by a more generic mountain graphic.

Moreover, the spokesperson from Mondelēz acknowledged the impact of this decision on consumers, noting, “While we understand that this may be disappointing for some consumers, we continue to invest in Toblerone. We also have an exciting pipeline of innovation ahead.” This statement reflects the company’s proactive approach in exploring new product developments and alternatives to meet the evolving demands of its customer base.
