Retailing is a significant contributor to employment in the UK, employing nearly three million individuals and supporting a further 1.5 million jobs in related industries. As the country’s largest private-sector employer, the retail industry holds great importance.
To show support for shopworkers and emphasize their vital role in our communities, Usdaw activists nationwide are organizing events in stores and shopping centers. The aim of these events is to encourage the public to acknowledge the hard work performed by retail workers and raise awareness that they are the backbone of our communities.
National Retail Workers’ Day serves as an excellent opportunity to express gratitude to all retail workers for their relentless dedication. Additionally, it allows Usdaw to highlight its commitment to supporting these workers through various initiatives:
– Negotiating higher pay rates and advocating for more secure employment contracts.
– Campaigning for the revitalization of high streets under the “Save Our Shops” movement.
– Collaborating with employers, politicians, and the police to address abuse, threats, and violence faced by retail workers.
Paddy Lillis, General Secretary of Usdaw, conveys his heartfelt appreciation, extending gratitude on behalf of the union. Lillis invites the public to join in celebrating this inaugural national Retail Workers’ Day, recognizing the importance of fostering positive relationships between retail workers and the communities they serve.
In addition to this one day of appreciation, Usdaw remains committed to the ongoing campaign for improved workers’ rights. They continuously engage in negotiations with employers, seeking better terms and conditions for retail workers. It is essential to acknowledge that retail work is an arduous profession, requiring individuals to demonstrate round-the-clock dedication, possess diverse skill sets, and persevere in a demanding, profit-driven, and target-oriented environment.
As the UK’s fifth largest trade union, Usdaw represents over 350,000 members, collectively working towards the betterment of the retail industry and the rights of its workers.
