Trade body Salmon Scotland has reported a notable increase in overall salmon farm survival rates, rising by an impressive 10% year-on-year. This enhancement has led to a significant uptick in domestic salmon sales, benefiting consumers and the industry alike.

From January to June 2024, monthly salmon survival rates averaged an outstanding 99.12%. Salmon Scotland attributes this achievement to “continued improvements in fish health and environmental conditions.” Such advancements contribute positively to the sustainability of salmon farming practices across Scotland.

Furthermore, the overall survival rate across all farms reached a robust 82.3%, marking a substantial increase from the previous year’s figure of 72.3%. Salmon Scotland emphasized that these rates are indicative of the industry’s “continued improvements” in fish health and environmental management. Since 2018, the sector has invested over £1 billion in innovations, targeting advancements in veterinary care, technology, and stock management.

This boost in survival rates translates directly to more high-protein, low-carbon meals for consumers. Not only does this enhance food security, but it also stimulates economic growth through increasing sales both domestically and internationally.

In fact, exports of Scottish salmon surged by 45% last year, reaching a staggering record of £844 million. This figure averages out to £2.31 million per day, solidifying Scottish salmon’s position as the UK’s largest food export. Additionally, domestic sales experienced a robust rise of 9.1% in the 12 months leading up to June 2024, maintaining salmon’s status as the UK’s most popular fish choice.

Tavish Scott, chief executive of Salmon Scotland, remarked: “These figures demonstrate our members’ commitment to fish health and welfare, and to responsible farming. Scottish salmon farmers uphold the highest animal welfare standards in the world, but they are always striving to do better.”

He continued, emphasizing, “The hard work of our farmers, supported by more than a billion pounds of investment in new technology, has been rewarded with survival rates at record highs. At the same time, demand for Scottish salmon is soaring at home and overseas. This is thanks to its reputation for quality and sustainability, and the vital role it plays in supporting coastal communities and the wider economy.”

Finally, Scott noted, “Consumers continue to clamour for Scottish salmon. They recognize the quality and nutritional value of the fish we grow in our seas.” This statement underscores the relentless consumer demand for high-quality Scottish salmon, showcasing its significant contribution to both public health and the economy.
