The Local Government Association, an organization representing local authorities in England and Wales, is advocating for the government to impose a ban on e-cigarette manufacturers by 2024. This call comes in response to the staggering amount of single-use vapes, approximately 1.3 million, being discarded each week, often resulting in litter on our streets.

In light of this proposal, Muntazir Dipoti, the national president of the Fed, responds: “While a ban on single-use vapes may initially appear as a straightforward and effective method to address issues of underage vaping and litter, we, along with the anti-smoking organization ASH, believe that such action could inadvertently fuel an already flourishing illicit market.”

Mr. Dipoti further elaborates, highlighting the beneficial role that vapes play in helping individuals quit smoking, as they have become an integral part of daily life. He warns that banning them entirely would only lead to an increased activity in the black market. History has shown that prohibition hardly deters people from acquiring desired products.

It is crucial to consider all aspects when determining the best approach to regulate e-cigarettes, considering the potential consequences tied to outright prohibition. To provide effective solutions, collaboration among various stakeholders is essential, including local authorities, manufacturers, and anti-smoking organizations.
