According to reports in the national media, there will be an increased dedication of resources and time to address reported offences, particularly shoplifting, when there is a ‘reasonable lead’ such as CCTV footage or eyewitness accounts. This development aims to tackle the ongoing issue of shop theft, which significantly impacts the lives of independent retailers and poses serious threats to their business viability.

Speaking on behalf of the Federation of Independent Retailers (the Fed), Muntazir Dipoti, the National President, emphasizes that shop theft cannot be underestimated as it affects independent retailers on a daily basis. He further notes that numerous incidents of shoplifting have become increasingly violent. Recognizing the longstanding lack of action from police forces towards these offences, the Fed welcomes the news that these crimes will now be investigated, provided there is sufficient evidence for a conviction.

However, the Fed is not satisfied with mere verbal commitments and intends to take action. The organization will address chief constables and police and crime commissioners to ensure that reported cases of shop theft are promptly acted upon. News about the expected pledges emerges in light of recent statistics reported by the Office of National Statistics, which reveal a significant 24% increase in shoplifting incidents in England and Wales in the year up to March 2023.

Dipoti highlights that these numbers might not accurately represent the true scale of the problem due to poor police responses resulting in many retailers failing to report shop theft. Disillusioned by the lack of police action, retailers refrain from reporting crimes, potentially leading to an even higher number of unreported shop theft cases during the same period.

In recent developments, the Fed has called for government grants to assist independent retailers in enhancing their security systems. Dipoti stresses the urgent need for the police and justice system to prioritize the fight against shop theft. Moreover, he advocates for financial support so that independent retailers can invest in high-quality CCTV systems to safeguard themselves, their employees, and their businesses.
