The call to action on tackling loneliness and building community has been endorsed by 14 leading organizations. Among these are the British Red Cross, Campaign to End Loneliness, Jo Cox Foundation, Age UK, Nesta, Carers UK, The Cares Family, Sense, LGBT Foundation, Marmalade Trust, Royal Voluntary Service, UK Youth, Mind, Astra Foundation, along with over 100 other contributing organizations. Together, they are calling on the government to renew its commitment to addressing loneliness by implementing a series of measures. These measures include the appointment of a dedicated Minister for Loneliness, supported by a cross-government team, as well as the development of a refreshed strategy with clear objectives and dedicated funding. Additionally, the call for guidance to address loneliness in schools and workplaces, and the need for reform in social care and support systems to ensure individuals with disabilities, older people, those with long-term conditions, and unpaid caregivers can establish and maintain meaningful relationships and connections.
James Lowman, the Chief Executive Officer of ACS, emphasized the significant role that local shops play in reducing loneliness within the communities they serve. Acting as social hubs, these stores provide a space for customers who may be more vulnerable or isolated to interact. Due to convenience stores’ nature, their staff are well-positioned to identify the needs of their customers. ACS encourages retailers to build upon their existing efforts to alleviate loneliness in their communities.
According to findings from ACS’ 2023 Local Shop Report, 36% of customers have close familiarity with the people running and working in their local shops. Undoubtedly, this highlights the potential for local stores to foster personal connections and combat loneliness.
ACS is actively involved in various initiatives to address loneliness, including its membership in the government’s Employers’ Leadership Group and Tackling Loneliness Hub. Furthermore, ACS is a founding signatory of the Tackling Loneliness Champions Pledge.
